THE TAMING AND TRAINING OF DWARF HAMSTERS
Oh NO! So your dwarf hamster is afraid of everything except maybe another dwarf hamster. This is nothing new the dwarf hamsters can be tamed to become accustomed to you handling it and you can also be friends too.
Many times dwarf hamsters are said to be mean, nasty, and vicious biters, this is not true unless they are allowed to become wild. If your dwarf hamster is not handled at least every two weeks then it could lose its tameness and you may have to start hamster taming all over again with them to build their trust again.
Is it difficult to get your dwarf hamster to trust you, is it biting or nipping your hand or fingers, and are you afraid of your dwarf hamster? I am going to try to help you with your hamster taming so that holding your dwarf hamster will be fun and you will not dread having to hold it.
The first thing you need to do is to get your dwarf hamster to know you and to know that it can trust you. It will also need to get used to the brand new environment that it will be living in so make sure it is kept clean and safe. Do not start off by trying to hold your dwarf hamster instead try to get it to get used to you for a couple of days maybe by putting an object of yours in the cage with it and talking to the dwarf hamster in soothing tones for it to get used to your voice.
After your dwarf hamster has gotten used to you, then you will want to start your hamster training to get used to your hands. Try putting hamster treats in your hand and resting it on the bottom of the cage palm up so the dwarf hamster can get the treat. It may take a few tries before your dwarf hamster gets the courage to take the treat but once it does you know you have made a conquest. Repeat this process a few days and then when your dwarf hamster tries taking the treat the next time try picking it up but be gentle yet holding it firmly enough not to drop the dwarf hamster from your hand.
You need to not do anything that will break the trust that you are building with your dwarf hamster like dropping it. While you are building this trust use your dwarf hamsters name so it will start to recognize it, because the more you use their name the more familiar it becomes.
Once you have gotten your dwarf hamsters trust then you can start to train it to do a few tricks. It can learn tricks like sitting up, shaking hands, and coming to you when you call its name just like a dog. It just takes time and a lot of patience and practice, practice, practice.
Make sure that the treats you are using for rewards is healthy and that your dwarf hamster likes them. You do not want to use candy or junk food when choosing their treats. Even when using treats from a pet store make sure that you read the labels so you know what they are made of. The treats should not contain sugar or any chemical components these are not good for your dwarf hamster. Use sunflower seeds, bits of apples, or bits of other foods that are good for your pet.
Here are some to do’s. Talk to your pet dwarf hamster in a soft gentle voice. Always move slowly prior to and during your handling of it. You should always wash your hands before holding your pet hamster so you always smell the same way. Let your dwarf hamster smell your hand before putting your hand in its cage and let it calm down if the hamster is scared at first. You will need to be patient because you cannot build a dwarf hamster’s confidence in a day.
These are a few of the don’ts. Please do not make quick or jerky movements, because if you startle a dwarf hamster you will put it on the defensive. You also should not make any loud noises because the dwarf hamsters have acute hearing. Do not let your pet fall from any great height they can be hurt very easily. Also do not pick up a sleeping dwarf hamster.
Your patience and care will be worth every minute you have spent training your dwarf hamster and gaining their trust. So good luck and happy hamster taming and hamster training .
