DWARF MOMMY HAMSTERS

What and how to know about a pregnant dwarf hamster. It is a wonderful process to be apart of. The dwarf hamster mommy can carry about a half dozen tiny dwarf hamster babies in her little belly. Dwarf hamsters carry their babies about 16 to 18 days before they are born.

It’s not easy to tell if your dwarf hamster is pregnant in fact it is not obvious until a few days before the birth of the tiny hamsters. Usually around 10 days you can see her starting to do some changes. Her body size will get fat around the rear, it will get a pear like shape, and she also will begin to eat and drink more frequently.

Another sign of the mommy dwarf hamster is she will have behavior changes so she may become a little aggressive and may nip at you if you try to hold her this will make her uncomfortable. So as you can see it is not a good time for you to play, or pet, or pick her up just leave her be.

Also the dwarf mommy hamster will begin to hoard her food, and become lazy not wanting to play. She may even get aggressive towards the male hamster. If she does get aggressive towards him then separate them. Otherwise let them be until the birth, then remove him or he will try to breed again, this could be bad for her and cause problems.

When you find out your dwarf hamster is pregnant start nurturing her and the unborn dwarf baby hamsters. Start feeding her high protein food, like oats, peanut butter, hard boiled eggs and cheese. Give mommy fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and fresh water every day, but do not feed her too much. This will provide good nutrition for the mommy and the baby dwarf hamsters.

Now you will need to begin preparing for the birth of the tiny babies and making mommy more comfortable. You will need to give her lots of clean bedding, clean cage, and clean nesting materials, like paper towels, cotton, tissues, or shredded paper. Some might like a nesting box to use for the birth. This is not necessary so it is up to you to purchase this item or not. It is important that mommies cage is kept clean, fresh air, and away from any cold drafts or extreme heat. Also put your cage in a quiet room so mommy does not get nervous and eat her young.

Now you are ready for the tiny baby dwarf hamsters to be born. Once the baby hamsters are born you can not touch them for 3 weeks. If you touch them mommy may feel threatened and she may eat them due to exposing her babies to danger. So please do not touch them and just give mommy a healthy diet and a clean living environment.

Once the baby dwarf hamsters are weaned you will need to separate all the males from the females before breeding starts. If they start too young it could cause death or other health issues. Mommy especially should wait 2 to 3 months before breeding her again.
