You may be wondering now why I said dwarf hamsters are smart, it helps to know a little about dwarf hamsters then you will be able to easily see for your self what makes them so smart.
Siberian Dwarf Hamster
Siberian dwarf hamsters grow to about four inches in length. Due to their small size they manage to escape from small openings very easily, they can wiggly their little bodies out of an area almost the same exact size of them. They also have the ability to know where their cage has larger openings and of course when planning their escape will attempt to free themselves in that area first.. The Siberian dwarf hamster is good natured and makes an ideal pet for adults and children. Children often find it hard to handle this species since they are small and quick so it is important for parents to keep a close watch while the hamster is out of the cage. This hamster is also known to bite when it wants to escape. While it is a friendly hamster, it is smart and knows that if it bites the hand that is holding it the hand will loosen its grip and the hamster can make for a quick get a way. This species like all species of hamsters do not like to be caged in they are wild animals despite their small size and cuteness they do know the difference between a cage and freedom.
Dwarf Campbell’s Russian Hamsters
This species of dwarf hamsters is known to be nocturnal but the hamster does stay active for a few hours in the day. More active for a longer period of time than any of the other species of dwarf hamsters. Since this species is shy and nervous they can nibble on or bite the person who is caring for them. While handling a hamster of this species it is always advised to move slowly towards the cage and avoid any sudden movements or loud sounds. If the hamster is startled it will attack the cage in an effort to frighten the potential threat with its behavior.
Dwarf hamsters are smart for several reasons aside from their escape tactics. They are excellent forgers; the females in most cases take excellent care of their pups. Dwarf hamsters are known to separate themselves from their cage mates when they are ill. Often times it appears that a dwarf hamster knows when it will die and will make its self a little nest to lay in away from the other hamsters. All dwarf hamsters have natural instincts that they are born with but they do demonstrate some unique qualities that at the very least make them appear smarter than other hamsters.
