DWARF HAMSTER TRAINING ON WELCOMING YOUR TOUCH

Dwarf hamsters are from the wild so you will have to work at getting your pet to know you just as any other pet you may have. Time and patience is the key in dwarf hamster training on welcoming your touch.

It is best to start with a dwarf hamster at a young age around 4 to 5 weeks of age. Handling your hamster every day will get your pet to accept you easier. If they are not handled frequently than they may become nippers and not welcome the human touch.

The day has come to go and get your dwarf hamster. Some advice for the trip home so that your pet may not get too stressed; is to consider taking your own container making sure there is plenty of ventilation. If it is a long trip use a plastic container with ventilation, those pet store boxes may not make it through the trip. Your pet may chew right threw this thin cardboard.

Another thing see if you can get some of the bedding that your dwarf hamster was in, this will help with the transition and less stress on the tiny one. Go straight home do not stop at the store or go by other family members places. This could cause too much stress to your dwarf hamster. These little ones get stressed very easily and could cause them to become ill if not careful. Speak softly and do not have loud music going either just leave the hamster alone on the ride home.

Arriving at home you may want to put on some cloth gloves and cup the hamster gently in both hands to put your pet in your cage set up. Add some of the old bedding to the cage that you got from the pet store and leave the little one alone to explore the new surroundings, in fact for the next couple of days it is best to let your pet alone to get over any stress, but you can look at your tiny new pet.

Now first and foremost do not wake a sleeping hamster you may get bite quite hard. Since they are nocturnal it is best to wait of an evening to train them and take things slowly in stages. Let your pet get adjusted to your smell and the sound of your voice so that your hamster remembers you and you are not going to hurt them.

First wash your hands of any foods or scents, next try rubbing their bedding on your hands and slowly put your hand into the cage and do not move, let your pet come to you to sniff your scent while speaking in a soft tone to your pet. Do this a few times each evening with short intervals for the next couple days or until your hamster is not frightened by your hand anymore.

Next try feeding your pet with a treat, once the dwarf hamster is comfortable about taking food from your hand then try putting the treat in the palm of your hand. This to will take a few days to do. Once your pet climbs in your hand then gently stroke your pets fur while the hamster is busy eating the treat in your hand. Continue this method until your hamster is comfortable with your touch. Remember all this is done while your pet is in the cage. Do not take your hamster out of the cage yet.

Next try to cup your pet with both hands gently after your hamster has crawled in the palm of your hand while in the cage. Do this until your pet hamster is comfortable in letting you hold them. After a few days of this you can pick up your hamster and hold them next to you. This sounds like a lot of work but with time and patience you will have a more trusting relationship and a welcoming touch with your dwarf hamster.

I hope this article helps you on dwarf hamster training on welcoming your touch; this will be a reward in itself for both you and your dwarf hamster.
